SURPRISE:
by Bob Binz

This came from an old Monthly Chapter Bulletin - Valley H-Lites - June 1976

On the 27th of May, 24 Florissant Barbershoppers with enthusiasm, refreshments, and lots of ideas as to where we were going, started out on a mystery bus trip. The way the driver headed even I wasn't sure where we were going and I along with Al Rubin were supposed to know. The old bus really rang with the old songs and the suds really flowed. We made a stop on the way to pick up two hitch hikers, John Matlock and Frank Cook. While we were stopped some members had to wash their hands. They had to wash their hands so bad they were about to burst! After 2 hours on the road, we arrived at our destination, the brand new St. Francois Co. Chapter of SPEBSQSA, of Flat River Mo. We arrived just in time for their Beer Break. Their President, Carroll Gerig along with the director and remaining members were great hosts.

After a warm up session of our combined Chapters the Florissant Valley Chapter and the Interstate Music Co. serenaded the Flat River boys. The St. Francois Co. Chapter was next. What a pleasant surprise! How 14 New Barbershoppers can sound so good is beyond me! There were absolutely great!!!! Look out all of you St. Louis Area Chapters, a dark horse is coming to the September contest and from what I heard we'll all have to give it our best shot. By 11:30 we hoisted anchor and started out for home. We sopped to let our two hitch hikers out to lighten our load. Al Rubin ran out of the Bus!!! That's a funny thing, wonder what it means? Ask him!!

As we journeyed home the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak. The songs did not ring so true as they had before, but we tried. Some members tried to sleep but we didn't let that happen! I just know they were glad we kept them awake!

The experience was good for both Chapters. The Flat River guys are off to a great start and we will be hearing more from them in the future.

A special thanks goes out to Al Rubin for getting the bus and supervising the Trip. Things went real smooth and everyone had a good time. You people that didn't go missed a "Hell of a Night". Next time come along! You can't go wrong with a song in the Florissant Valley Style.
