Highlights of 1970 Pamper Camper

These came from an old Monthly Chapter Bulletin from November 1970

Al Rubin graciously agreed to write this grassroots account of our social highlight of the year: --- It all started with Bud Pondrum's ham and beans, a couple of beers, and a special Jack Walsh-Julie Goss rendition. Saturday morning all survived Al Rubin's cooking and enjoyed breakfast with Robert Emmet Murphy, park attendant and native of Dublin as our guest.

By noon enough robust and rotund Barbershoppers had arrived to play Indian ball followed by volley ball after a beer break and quartet or two. Bud Tanner and Al Rubin qualified as spelunkers wen they retrieved the ball from a perilous sink hole. Vic Shaff gave Bud a “pointer” in volley ball; next morning Bud's finger pointed persistently.

After another beer break and a sample of Larry Forristal's vegetable-beef soup, a few innings of corkball proved Frank Kohn can do anything. As the sun began to fade, so did the athletic endeavors of the Barbershoppers. Then the steak, potatoes and salad hit the table in the nick of time. After the excellent meal, the camp fire was cranked up and the program began.

For three hours, the park rang in Barbershop Harmony. The highlight was the Vern Schneider quartet's rendition of “Hello My Baby”, which they continued singing until they got it right. Joel Kramar arrived on his cycle complete with helmet, black jacket and pants. About this time, Larry's lentil soup (this time without overalls or sock) was ready and savored by all.

By midnight, the faint of heart turned in, leaving a few stalwarts serenading the trees. Getting no reaction from the trees, about four squeezed in Joel's puptent to serenade him, be he didn't appreciate such thoughtfulness.

A small band of early birds were up at 7:30 chirping “Sweet Roses of Morn”, getting a dirtly look from Kramer who obviously doesn't enjoy the finer things in life. The morning was spent breaking camp, singing, and disposing of the left over beer to save dragging it home. Good thinking!

About 30 grateful Barbershoppers want to thank Camper Chairman Dick Olson and Gene Rowald and also the program chairman Burt troll and Larry Enterprise oops Forristal. It was real great to have with us such fine folks as Dick Marlowe, Ralph Schulte, John Fortenberry, John Rugger and Bud Tanner.
